Montague Corp. is a company of cycling
enthusiasts, dedicated to the development of innovative, high quality cycling
products that meet and exceed the demands of it's customers active lifestyles.
The design of the Montague line of high-performance travel-friendly bicycles is
the result of more than ten years of research and development by Harry Montague,
a Washington, D.C. architect and inventor. Montague's first prototype was built
in 1984 and praised by Bicycling Magazine as having the best design ever
for a full-size, high-performance bicycle that folds. The new bicycle was dubbed
the "Montague BiFrame" for its patented Concentrus system, which unites the two
parts of the frame with concentric seat tubes, nested one inside the
other.
In June, 1987, Harry and his son, David, formed a partnership to
design and manufacture the most innovative bicycles that fold in the world. The
company was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1988.
In 1992, Montague
Corporation secured a highly desirable joint venture with BMW, the German car
manufacturer. In one year, BMW sold 10,000 bicycles in Germany alone - almost
1/3 the volume of BMW motorcycles sold worldwide. The program has since expanded
to many other countries, including the U.S., where mountain bikes are available
at BMW car dealerships nationwide. In 1996, the BMW/Montague Mountain Bike was
chosen as the Official Mountain Bike of the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. BMW
provided thousands of the specially designed mountain bikes to the Atlanta
Committee of the Olympic Games. The bikes were used for transportation within
the Olympic Village and for the closing ceremonies of the 1996
Olympics.
Today Montague's bicycle line has expanded to include many
different riding models. The original chromoly folding frame design includes an
18-speed mountain bike, 21-speed hybrid-style model, 21-speed commuting/road
bicycle, and the Popular Mechanic's award winning 21-speed tandem. The aluminum
X-Series™ bike line that folds has the 24-speed MX Mountain Bike, the 21-speed
comfort bike, and the Electric CX Comfort Bike. Montague's innovative bicycle
line continues to unfold the future of cycling.
